Grußwort von Sylvaina Gerlich

Afrika wird von vielen Europäern reduziert auf wenige Informationen, Eindrücke und Erfahrungen. Zentral ist dabei, dass Afrika als Einheit gesehen wird – in ihrer Wahrnehmung scheinen alle Schwarzafrikaner gleich zu sein. Nur geringe Unterschiede werden eingeräumt: Regionen sind friedlicher oder weniger friedlich, stabiler oder instabiler. Afrika ist aber kein Land, sondern ein Kontinent mit 54 Ländern und über 3.000 Ethnien.

Die Rolle und Stellung der Frau und das Ansehen ihrer gesellschaftlichen Leistung, die bei diesem Filmfestival im Zentrum stehen, ist von Land zu Land und oftmals von Ethnie zu Ethnie unterschiedlich. Auf dem Kontinent Afrika erleben wir in einigen Ländern die Unterdrückung von Frauen, in anderen Regionen und Nationen sind sie hoch angesehen, etwa als Mütter, die
maßgeblich die Bildung ihrer Kinder fördern.

Frauen spielen auch ökonomisch in Familie und Staat eine große Rolle und haben in vielen Ländern zunehmend politischen Einfluss. Auch dies ist ein Teil Afrikas! Die Aufmerksamkeit der Filmemacher/innen und der Medien gilt – im Sinne der Opfer – meist den negativen Erscheinungen wie Unterdrückung durch Familientraditionen und staatliche Institutionen.

Das Programm des 5. Afrikanischen Filmfestivals Hamburg im Studio-Kino verspricht
erneut, ein facettenreiches Bild Afrikas zu zeichnen, in diesem Jahr mit dem Blick
afrikanischer Filmemacherinnen auf den Einfluss und die Sichtweise der afrikanischen
Frauen. Ich wünsche mir, dass das Festival ein herausragender Mosaikstein sein wird, der
neue Informationen, Eindrücke und Erfahrungen bietet zu einem Kontinent, der nach wie
vor in seiner Vielfalt nicht erkannt wird.

Vielen Dank an „Augen-Blicke-Afrika e. V.“ – ich freue mich, 2016 Chairlady des
5. Afrikanischen Filmfestivals in Hamburg zu sein!

Sylvaina Gerlich ist seit dem Jahr 2008 erstes gewähltes Mitglied des Hamburger
Integrationsbeirates für den Kontinent Afrika und Vorstand von IMIC e.V. (Interkulturelles
Migranten Integrations Center e.V.). Der Verein wurde 2010 gegründet mit dem Ziel, seine
Mitglieder und Außenstehende unterschiedlicher Herkunft bei der Integration zu
unterstützen und einen kulturellen Austausch zum besseren gegenseitigen Verständnis
in der Gesellschaft zu ermöglichen.

Welcoming address

Many Europeans base their vision of Africa on limited information, impressions, and experience. They tend to see Africa as one, and in their view all Black Africans seem to be the same. Their view only allows for minor differences between the regions, of which some are perceived as more peaceful or stable than others. However, Africa is not a country. It is a continent, which includes 54 nations and more than 3,000 ethnic groups.

This festival will focus on the role and position of women and the recognition of her contributions to society. These vary from country to country, often depending on the respective ethnic group. In some African countries women suffer oppression, whereas elsewhere they are highly respected, for example as mothers, who play an important role in fostering the education of their children.

Women also matter economically, in their families and states, and they are increasingly influencing the political agenda. This is Africa, too! For the benefit of the victims, filmmakers and the media usually draw the public’s attention to negative aspects, e.g. oppressive family traditions and institutions.

The programme of the 5^th African Film Festival in the Studio-Kino is once again a promise to show the many facets of the continent. The perspectives of female African cinematographers and their views of the impact and ideas of African women will be in the focus this year. I look forward to the festival as an extraordinary piece in the mosaic that offers new impressions, experiences and information about a continent, whose diversity has yet to be discovered.

Sylvaina Gerlich was the first elected counsellor of the Hamburger Integrationsbeirat für den Kontinent Afrika in 2008, and has been its member ever since. She sits on the Board of IMIC e.V. (Interkulturelles Migranten Integrations Center e.V.), an association established in 2010 in order to provide support with integration and to promote a better mutual understanding in society through cultural dialogue.

Since 2012, Africans and African Germans have celebrated the “Africa Day” on the Wandsbek Market in Hamburg. The event takes place each summer. It was founded by Sylvaina Gerlich.
